Midway between Johannesburg and Durban on an idyllic piece of land, encircled by awe-inspiring mountains is a beautiful lodge that takes its name from “The Amphitheatre," the most famous geographic feature in the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa. Widely regarded as one of the most impressive cliffs on Earth. The resort looks directly onto its facade and on a clear day, after the rains, the 1 km Tugela Falls can be seen plunging down the ancient rock face.

Walk out the gate and into beautiful grasslands, populated with buck, small mammals and an abundance of birdlife. Take a jog past the dam, river and  wetland. Unique dwellings are crafted from stone and thatch, with stained glass, mosaics, metal and wooden carvings. Some rooms are located in converted grain silos. The entire place is surrounded by beautiful indigenous rockeries.

Enjoy colourful cocktails in a funky bar and delicious meals in the restaurant. Cooked from ingredients grown in the organic veggie patch. Plan to stay for one night and end up staying a week. There is just so much to do here, and, of course, there is that spectacular view. From the lawn, a picture postcard panorama takes in the entire Northern range from the Amphitheatre to Cathkin Peak, enticing you to explore it!

The Drakensberg is the premier hiking destination in South Africa, and the Northern Drakensberg is regarded by many as the most dramatic section of all, with access to the highest country in the world, "Lesotho," the biggest indigenous forest in the berg, the largest consolidation of rock art in the world and the highest waterfall on the planet.
